Class 3A boys pairings released

The Iowa High School Athletic Union released its pairings for the two largest classes of boys basketball Thursday.

Washington will face Southeast Conference foe Ft. Madison Monday, Feb. 18 at Oskaloosa in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament. The winner will play the winner of Oskaloosa and South Tama Thursday, Feb. 21 at the home of the highest remaining seed. Oskaloosa has a 10-5 record while South Tama is 0-16.

The Demons currently have an 8-8 record while Ft. Madison is 7-12. The Demons defeated the Bloodhounds 73-60 Dec. 18 at Ft. Madison with Trashaun Willis scoring 22, Trevor Quigley 15 and Luke Turner 11. Jayden fedler had 18 to lead the Bloodhounds. Logan Rashid scored 19 for the Bloodhounds. Fedler averages 14.7 points on the season, making 58.8 percent of his field goals. He also leads the team in rebounds at 5.8 a game. Rashid averages 13.1 points a game and leads the team in assists at 3.1 per game.

Cade Hennnigan is the only Demon averaging in double figures as he goes for 10.8 points per game. Quigley’s average is 9.9 points. Willis averages 8.4, Turner 8.3 and Ethan Hunt 7.4. Willis leads in rebounds per game at 5.6. Hennigan is close behind at 5.25. Turner averages 3.9 assists per game.

Oskaloosa owns a Dec. 12 74-48 victory over the Demons, although it was close throughout until the visitors pulled away in the third and fourth quarters. Oskaloosa was ranked No. 1 at the time, but have fallen from the top 10.

Cole Henry, a 6-10 senior for the Indians, averages 20.7 points a game on 65 percent shooting from the field. Xavier Foster, a 7-foot junior, hits 14.7 points a game on 53.2 percent shooting. Rian Yates, a 6-foot-5 senior, carries a 10.7 point scoring average on 36.8 percent. Almost 3/4 (104 of 144) of his field goal attempts are from 3-point land. Foster averages 12.3 rebounds per game and Henry 10.2. Yates hands out an average of 6 assists per game.

Substate champions advance to the state tournament March 4-8 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
