Washington honored five graduating senior wrestlers Thursday at the WHS gym before the last home duals of the season. Kiowa Keith, Collin Murphy, Tanner Murphy, Mitchell Huisenga and Sam Donnolly were honored before the home crowd along with the Senior Cheerleaders and parents.
The Demon wrestling team has been battling injuries, illness and various other maladies the past few weeks to cobble a line-up together. The home team pieced together a team that dropped only its fourth dual of the year, to a tough Williamsburg squad. Washington responded with a dominant win over Oskaloosa.
Williamsburg, eighth in the iawrestle.com dual team rankings, started the dual up 6 points after Washington gave up a forfeit at 126 pounds. Dillan Sanders, the Demons 132-pounder, put Washington?s first points on the board with a 7-2 decision over Garret Jensen.
Then the Raiders went on a run and notched two falls and two decisions over the next four matches to take a 24-3 lead. Washington?s fourth ranked 170-pounder, Tristin Westphal-Edwards, scored three team points with an 11-5 decision over Williamsburg?s Tucker Stanerson to stop, temporarily, the Raider run.
Williamsburg tacked on 10 more team points after a major decision and a Washington forfeit at 195 pounds. The Raiders lost a team point as a result of an unsportsmanlike penalty but still held a commanding 33-6 team lead with 5 matches left.
Washington?s Tanner Murphy, 5-1 decision, and Mitchell Huisenga, 11-1 major decision, added to the Demon total to make it 33-13 with three matches left. Then the Raiders shut the Demons down.
Williamsburg picked up a major at 106 and a fall at 113 before a battle at 120. The Raider?s 5th ranked Grayson Kesterson had all he could handle from Walker Ikerd. Ikerd came out aggressive and battled to 0-0 at the end of one. Ikerd started the second-period in the top position and rode Kesterson until 20 seconds left in the frame before the Raider managed an escape. Kesterson kept Ikerd down through the third and walked away with a 1-0 decision.
Williamsburg won the dual 46-13.
The Demons followed with a dominant 63-12 win over Oskaloosa.
Washington recorded falls from Sanders, Justin Simmering, Kiowa Keith, Tanner Murphy and Matt Collett and a decision from Dylan Farmer in the match.
