Although many area prep events were rescheduled or postponed Tuesday, the Pen City Relays were run in Fort Madison.
Washington High School?s girls track team placed seventh of nine teams in the large school class. Just 5.5 points separated the third through seventh places.
Columbus finished seventh of eight teams in the small school class.
Washington finished second in the 14-team junior varsity team meet with 44 points. Burlington won with 92. Columbus was seventh with 28.
Since it is still early in the season, Washington head coach Stefanie Tschantz continued to experiment with different athletes in different events.
?We changed a few things up (Tuesday) night, to see what we could do,? Tschantz said. ?I feel like the team is really doing well.?
The Demons did not get a victory in any event, but had three second-place finishes.
Ashley Telleen was the highest individual finisher for the Demons. Her time of 1 minute, 11.58 seconds in the 400 hurdles was good for second place.
?I believe that is her season-best time in that race,? Tschantz said.
Washington?s 4x400-meter relay and sprint medley also placed second.
?Our sprint med of Leah Marek, Isabel Bailey, Jenah Greiner, and Hannah Anderson had a season-best time,? Tschantz said.
The coach was excited about the final race of the meet.
?Our 4x4 was a fun race to watch,? Tschantz said. ?Leah Marek, Brynn Beenblossom, Sophia Kleese, and Ashley Telleen finished second in a great race. Leah had a great lead-off leg, putting us into first at the handoff. Brynn and Sophia ran great and kept us right in the pack. As soon as Ashley got the handoff, she put us right back into second and we had our second-fastest time of the season. All four girls ran great races!?
Washington finished almost two seconds ahead of Mount Pleasant, then Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Fort Madison and Fairfield all finished next within a second and a half.
?Our distance medley of Demeri Bell, Cierra Miller, Beenblossom, and Brooke Stout also had a season-best time with Stout running a personal record in her 800 split,? Tschantz said.
The 4x2 relay team of Marek, Telleen, Greiner, and Anderson also had ran its best time of the season in finishing third.
?I would say Ashley Telleen, Jenah Greiner and Leah Marek are running great for us right now,? Tschantz said. ?They are always giving it 100 percent and they continue to get better each and every meet. They have put in a lot of hard work this season and it is paying off.?
Columbus could boast of a second and a third in the 100 meters with Angie Byas and Olivia Carrier finishing in those two spots, respectively.
The Wildcats 4x800 relay was the team?s other best finish with second behind Jenessa Carpenter, Destiny Langley, Odalyz Valdez and Anna Hamiton.
In the junior varsity meet, Peyton Cuddeback was second for the Demons in the 400 with a time of 1:22.15. Kleese was second in the 100 hurdles in 20.33. The 4x1 of Anna Venega, Miller, Michaela Hoffman and Olivia Marek was second with a time of 58.46.
Michelle Martinez was second for Columbus in the 100 at 14.79.
The meet had trouble with their timing system and results were not released until almost 24 hours after the meet ended. Even then, some were not correct.
?(Fort Madison was) going to email their timer as several coaches reported several errors,? Tschantz said. ?For example, they had one of my 3000 girls running 25 seconds slower than what I had.?
The Demons travel to Eddyville today.
