Washington captures third at  Waukee  tournament

The Al Garrison Dual Team Tournament was held Saturday in Waukee. The field featured five ranked teams and 46 ranked wrestlers spread across Class 2A and 3A.

The Demon wrestlers capped a good day by defeating Class 2A, second-ranked Ballard, 45-20, to take home third place in the 16-team tourney.

Washington went 4-1 in the tournament.

First up was Class 3A Urbandale. The Demons posted four pins and a tech fall on the way to a 38-28 win.

A rematch from the Cascade Dual Tourney with Class 2A Benton Community netted a similar result. Washington rolled to a 59-15 win.

The Demons won 8 of 14 matches, six by fall, to put away Class 3A Ankeny Centennial 42-33.

Next up was Johnston, the 4th ranked team in Class 3A. Washington scored two falls and two decisions in losing to the Dragons. Despite the team loss, Tanner Murphy pulled an upset of the No. 10 ranked Ben Standish with a 6-3 decision.

Logan Escher completed the tournament notching five straight pins to lead the Demons. Walker Ikerd also went undefeated with three falls of his own, plus a couple of decisions. Mitchell Huisenga went 4-0 with a pair of pins.

Tristin Westphal-Edwards and Tanner Murphy only lost once each on the day. Both of their losses came to ranked, Class 3A wrestlers.

?I was very pleased with our effort,? said Washington Coach Brent Van Weelden. ?The kids were focused and had a lot of energy all day long.?
