Voting turnout exceeded expectations

By David Hotle, The JOURNAL

Even with each city averaging less than a 30 percent turnout, Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer said that Washington County saw a better turnout for the municipal election Tuesday than many other Iowa counties he has seen.

He said the new election equipment worked very well and that the workers in the auditor?s office was very pleased with the results of using the equipment. The results of the municipal election were available about 45 minutes after the polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

?I think the poll workers were pleased with the equipment too,? he said. ?I think any concerns they had going into the election were relieved as the day went on and they found out the new equipment is a good thing.?

The county recently replaced its election equipment with about $100,000 worth of new equipment. Both new voting machines and an electrongi poll book were used in this election.

Widmer also said in talking with voters, people had been impressed at how quickly they were able to move through the line to vote.

He said the turnout in the cities aligned with cities that had contested races, with those cities drawing a larger turnout.

He also thanked the efforts of the poll workers, who he said did a ?fantastic job,? and the workers from the auditor?s office. He credits the smoothness of the election to their efforts.

The Washington County Supervisors will canvass the results of the election at 11 a.m. Nov. 14 in the council chambers.
