With the annual observance of Veterans Day falling on a Saturday this year, city and county offices will be closed on Friday to honor the event. Washington City offices and the Washington Public Library will be closed all day to honor Veterans Day. Kalona, Wellman and Riverside city halls will also be closed. Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer also reported that offices in the Washington County Courthouse would be closed for the holiday. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail.
Veterans Day is a holiday observed on Nov. 11 to honor people who have served in the United States armed forces. The holiday was originally named Armistice Day before being changed in 1954. The holiday is observed at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, which is the anniversary of the end of major hostilities during World War I.
Washington County Military Muiseum and American legion Post No. 29 will also co-host a veterans dinner at 6 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church.
