The Washington Municipal Band will hold its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 3, in the Immanual Lutheran Church.
The concert is designed to be attended after people finish the Washington Chamber of Commerce Tour of Homes.
The Washington Municipal Band is a community organization with over 60 members, ages 16 to 86. Musicians come from Washington and numerous surrounding communities to play band music that people love. The conductor and music director is Tom McNamar. In addition to the Christmas concert, the Muni Band plays 10 Thursday evening concerts every summer in downtown Washington?s Central Park bandshell. The band celebrated its 86th birthday this year.
McNamar said this would be the fifth year for the band?s presentation of a holiday concert. The idea for the performances came from band members.Since the band is probably best known to the community through the summer concerts it offers in Central Park, McNamar says playing at an indoor venue, such as the church, allows the band to offer a different auditory experience to the audience.
The concert program includes winter songs, seasonal favorites and traditional Christmas music.Children are welcomed and encouraged to attend. McNamar said it is good for the children to come to somewhat more formal musical events. The church is located at 116 E. Washington. There is no charge for attendance at the holiday concert.
The Washington Municipal Band is one of the oldest continually operating bands in Iowa.
