The Washington Middle School Jazz Band performed at the SEIBA Jazzfest at West High School in Iowa City on Saturday, March 3, 2018 and placed second in the Small Class Jr. High (class 1A-3A middle schools) out of 10 bands.
Quinn Wubbena, son of Grant and Diana Wubbena, received the over-all Outstanding Soloist award for Small Class Jr. High for his solo work on piano and drums.
The Jazz band also had 10 students receive solo awards: Quinn Wubbena, piano and drums; Jenna Messer (daughter of Mark and Julie Messer), alto saxophone; Natalie McCleary (daughter of Chad and Katie McCleary); Ally Rees (daughter of Tyler and Mindi Rees), Trumpet; Henry Raber (son of Ed and Ericka Raber), bass; Quentin Howard (son of Steve and Charla Howard), trombone; Kendra Kucera (daughter of Kurtis and Teresa Kucera), flute; Sam Ackerman (son of Jerry Ackerman and Leslie Allender) Bari Sax; Teegan Sulentich (daughter of Mark and Glenda Sulentich), flute; and Nolan Watson (son of David and Elizabeth Watson) on drums.
The band performed for an audience and three judges, then spent about a half hour with clinician, John Rapson, who watched their performance and worked with them after their performance.
Their selections included Splanky, Here?s That Rainy Day and Cubano Chant.
