Hospice celebrates 30 years of service

By Xiomara Levsen, The JOURNAL

Hospice of Washington County is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is looking for information on its history.

?We are looking for all community members that have been touched by or were part of Hospice of Washington County. Whether you?re a former staff member, board member, volunteer or a hospice family member, we want to hear from you,? marketing director Robyn Harvey-Smith said. ?Your story is part of this organizations legacy.?

Hospice of Washington County is having an open house on May 22 and would like to have some historical information for people to view at the event, she added. She is hoping they can get a list of names and pictures from anyone who used its services or volunteered there for the open house.

?Hopefully, we can get some information from the family members of former patients, staff and nurses,? Smith said. ?We want to honor them and hear their personal stories.?

Hospice of Washington County started out as a volunteer organization and little information was documented about it.

?The early nurses and staff members would work at their paying jobs during the day and go see Hospice patients on their own time after a long day at work,? Smith said. ?What dedication they all had to make sure patients that were diagnosed with a terminal illness didn?t have to go through the end of their lives alone and in pain.?

If you have any information, you can contact Smith at at 319-653-7321 or email or stop by the office.
