Halcyon House News

The weekly church service was provided The Rev. Maureen Howard representing the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The sermon was titled ?In the Wilderness with Us.? Scripture from First Mark 1:9-15 was shared with those in attendance in the Epworth Chapel. Beth Janecek shared her talents on the piano.

To honor the Washington Monument?s being dedicated in 1885, residents gathered for ?Cranium Crunch? and trivia was shared about ?First Ladies? and fun facts about the ?Washington Monument.? Residents in Rosewood enjoyed Music Therapy with Elisabeth Tinnes. Eveline Adam gave the Rosary in the Wedgewood family room. Residents gathered in Rosewood for Richard Colby?s ?Classic Etc.? music program featuring composers Sir Arthur Sullivan, Ludwig van Beethoven ,Franz Lehár, Jacques Offenbach, Alexander ?Al? Dubin, Harry Warren, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Charles Lloyd (?C. L.?) Barnhouse. Some residents gathered in the Sagewood Dining Room for ?Hand Towel Embroidery? with Sherry Sieren, while others attended ?Bible Study? with Al and Lorna Olson in Wedgewood.

Halcyon House resident Gladys Ferguson and Halcyon Community Member Gretta Embree among other Red Hat Society members joined Mercy Brinning, Halcyon House Wellness Coordinator, in creating darling Red Hat Lady pins and necklaces made out of polymer clay and other materials. Mercy created the ?Red Hat Lady? pins in preparation for the class. Class participants then decorated the ladies with a wide variety of beads, clay, lace, rhinestones, ribbon, netting and glitter. A big thank-you to Mercy for organizing and leading this class!

Lori Hammes, Independent Stampin? Up Demonstrator leads a monthly Stampin? Up class for residents, staff and the greater community the last Tuesday of the month in the Game Room at Halcyon House. Halcyon House resident Loretta Gardner, among other residents and community members participated in the class. Class participants created four different cards with Lori?s assistance. Halcyon House would like to thank Lori for not only teaching one but two classes this month on-site.

?See You at the Movies? is hosted every Saturday night in the Game Room at Halcyon House. Alice George, Erma Ropp, Bea Johnson, Lee Smothers and several others enjoyed the movie ?Wonder? on Saturday, Feb. 24. The residents are looking forward to this week?s movie, ?An Uncommon Grace.?

Residents enjoyed attending a celebration in honor of Penny Stout. Penny is a 20-year veteran team member at Halcyon House and recently completed 14 rounds of chemotherapy. Halcyon House residents, team members, community members, and Penny?s family attended the celebration. One of Penny?s wishes when she completed her treatment was to enjoy a cake baked by Carol Greiner and Carol was kind enough to donate cake for the celebration. Penny is feeling good and looking forward to another 20 years at Halcyon House.

Shirley Canfield and Larry Canfield enjoyed a mini family reunion last Sunday in the Marshall Game Room at Halcyon House. In attendance were daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Tony Forcucci of Des Moines; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Earl Wellington of Washington; Grandchildren AJ Walker and his friend Jacque Spenner, Ashtin Walker, of Washington, Shannon and her husband Kam Earnest, of Des Moines. The center of attention was Shannon and Kam?s 2-month-old son, Kieran. Four-generation pictures were taken with each great-grandparent.
