The people in Washington will have the opportunity to help the community?s veterans by forming the United States? second chapter of House of Heroes.
The founder, Wayne Anthony, of Columbus, Ga., arrived in Washington yesterday at the invitation of Russ Parker, of Washington.
With temperatures in the 80s and the sun shining on the Washington County Fair, the first day of livestock competition saw the running of the poultry show, the pet show and the dog show.
The Washington County Fair opened on a regal note Sunday evening when 11 young women vied for the title of Washington County Fair Queen.
Natalie Friese, the daughter of Dennis and Angie Friese, will wear the queen?s crown during the fair, this week. She is a senior at Washington High School. The first runner-up was Seneca Cuddeback, daughter of Larry and Kathy Cuddeback. She is a senior at Mid-Prairie High School. Shannel Winkel received the Miss Fair Spirit Congeniality award. She is the daughter of Delyle and Susan Winkel and is a junior at Keota High School.

A $165,000 grant is apparently heading to Washington County to help people repair homes damaged in the May 15 tornado.
The Washington High School baseball team extended its winning streak to six games last night with a pair of victories over Centerville, 16-0 and 8-7.
FAIRFIELD ? Brad Witthoft smacked three home runs and a pair of Fairfield seventh-inning rallies fell short as Washington swept a Southeast Seven Conference baseball doubleheader from Fairfield last night, 6-4 and 5-4.
Amanda Richardson?s double down the left field line with one out in the fifth inning scored Jenny Pearson with the game-ending run as the Washington High School softball team blasted Highland 12-2 in a nonconference softball game at the Washington High School softball field last night.
DONNELLSON ? A pair of second-place finishes highlighted local finishers at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson Saturday night.
Washington?s Harry Walker, the defending track champion, won his heat race and placed second behind Quincy, Ill., driver Mark Burgtorf in the I.M.C.A. late models. Burgtorf started in the fourth row but quickly battled to the front. Walker held off Kahoka, Mo.?s, Thad Trump for second.

Matt Olson, agricultural science technology and marketing instructor in the Washington Community School District, attended the Agricultural Science, Technology and Marketing Education Conference program at Des Moines, July 5-7.
The drought being suffered throughout the Midwest and other areas of the country couldn?t be considered anything other than negative, but publicity given Washington in the weekend edition (July 8-10) of USA Today, a nationwide newspaper published by Gannett Co. Inc., could be considered positive.
Two contestants vying for the title of Washington County Pork Queen for 1989 are Dawn Dee Roth and Amy Sieren. The girls are required to give short presentations and interviews with local judges on Pork Day, after which one will be selected to represent the county at area pork events and the Washington County Fair.

Max Lewis, of Wellman, has announced he won?t be a candidate for re-election to the Kirkwood Community College Board of Education when his fourth term expires this fall.
Sand and bare feet may make the popular tug-of-war competition at the 1978 Washington County Fair more challenging than ever.
Dick and Dan Greiner, officials in charge of the tugging, have announced those changes for this year?s pull. They say the wars will be staged on a sand field, with barefooted contestants seated. Gloves will be optional.

The town of Wellman has ordered a new 10-horsepower siren which will serve as a storm warning signal as well as a conventional fire siren. The new siren will be located in a spot where it can best cover the area.
Taxpayers in the Washington Community School District will pay about two mills more tax to support their schools during the coming year than was required this year.
