A community membership is available to Washington County residents at Halcyon House and another option for those over 55 looking for ways to stay active.
Halcyon House is focused on senior living, which is why they are offering the community membership to people 55 and above, marketing director Susan Wellington said.
The community membership started May 1 of this year, said Lifestyle and Wellness director Becky Carter.
?We already have been offering exercise classes to the community,? Carter said. ?We started that about nine years ago but we?ve now packaged it so it?s exercise classes, a membership to the fitness center, we offer educational programs, day trips and social events ? so it?s more holistic.?
Some of the classes include beginning line dancing starting Nov. 7 and regular line dancing, fusion flow, which is a combination of Pilates and a little bit of cardio work, and fitness assessments.
?Our schedule changes, so we may do one session of cardio kick,? Carter said. ?We?re going to be offering a barre class, which is Pilates and ballet.?
The exercise classes are limited to 15 people because of space, she added.
?But if there is a demand, then we?ll offer more classes,? Carter said. ?I?ve been looking at trying to add Tai Chi a couple of days a week.?
All of the classes are held in Building 3 down by the Applewood Bistro, in the Morrison Center.
?We just got new floors,? Carter said, ?and we?re going to be adding mirrors and barres.?
The floor is laminate with cushioning underneath to make it easier for dancing, Carter added.
?The room has kind of had a makeover,? Carter said. ?It?s really nice.?
Another focus of the community membership is having a healthy lifestyle.
?It?s not just staying active, not just physically, but mentally and socially,? Carter said, ?That?s what we really try to encourage here with our programming at Halcyon House.?
Community members also have access to the fitness center at Halcyon House.
?It?s a fully equipped fitness center,? Carter said. ?It has everything from cardio equipment from an elliptical to treadmills to steps and we have a full body strength machine so everything from lower body to upper body to abs and back. We have free weights, medicine balls, fit balls ? [which] are the big balls you exercise on and we have bands. We have everything.?
Fitness assessments are also being offered to community club members Nov. 20 and 21, according to the fall fitness class schedule. The assessments will test strength, flexibility, agility and endurance.
If someone joins as a community member, the fitness center and exercise classes aren?t the only things available for them.
?They can join us for a day trip for either a discounted rate or possibly free depending on the trip,? Carter said. ?We have educational programs people can participate in. We just recently had Iowa State Extension here doing a program on ?Powerful Tools for the Caregiver? and they?ve done a lot of them. They?re coming back and doing one on nutrition in January.?
Hy-Vee also taught a program about pre-paring your meals called ?Simple Fix,? Wellington said. You prepared a meal, put it in a Ziploc bag, and freeze it until you are ready to eat it. All you would do is put it in a crockpot, so it would be ready when you got home.
?Even some of our team members got involved with that,? Wellington said.
There is a monthly fee for the community membership. For more information contact the Halcyon House Wellness Department at 653-8453.
