The Garden Department of Fortnightly met Sept. 19, with hostess Shirley Pfeifer.
Leader Linda Varney called the meeting to order. The six members attending answered roll call by telling what they liked about fall. Minutes were read and approved. Shirley gave inspiration with a reading from Garden Wisdom by Ellyn Hughes. She then passed around Iowa Gardening magazines for each member to peruse and read something of interest. Jane Kruse read about watermelons and then asked ?true or false? questions. Vivian Griffith delighted members with information on the different types of peonies. Mary Langr intrigued members with an article about fall potting with ?weeds? for decorating. Jan Boyd had more information on peonies and also told how to use banana peels for plant nourishment, and ended with the topic of stink bugs! Shirley read about plants that deer and rabbits do like, with a list too long to list. Leader Linda read about the language of flowers and gave the meanings for each flower. After the meeting was adjourned, the members enjoyed visiting over refreshments.
Garden Department meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. If interested, please call Linda at 319-591-9035.
