The October meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Leon Beatty Post 29 was held on Oct. 10, at the Washington County Ambulance Center in Washington, with five members attending.

Vice President Connie Pence called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The opening prayer was given by Dixie Young. The Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of the Preamble and God was recited by all. One correction was made to the September minutes: the date of the meeting at the F Troop to discuss the Veterans Dinner should have been Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, instead of Monday, Sept. 18. The minutes were approved as corrected. Dixie Conrad gave the treasurer?s report. Deposits included funds from the poppy sale, four bake sales, and membership dues. Disbursements were sent for state membership, president?s project, and unit obligations. It was reported that the books could and would be audited. The 990 forms had been sent to the state. A check was sent to First District.

In old business, it was reported that Sue Gilmere and Dixie Young had attended the Veterans Dinner planning meeting held Sept. 19 at the F- Troop Museum. The Veterans Dinner will be held at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington on Nov. 11, 2017. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include pork loin, potato salad, baked beans, and desserts. The Auxiliary will be providing the dessert. All veterans and families are invited to attend. Connie Pence, Carla McCandless and Dixie Young will make calls to arrange for the desserts. A concert will be held at the Washington Community Center on Friday, Nov. 10, and the veterans attending will get a discount on their tickets. The boys and girls who went to Boys? State and Girls? State will be speaking of the experience while attending those events during the past summer. It was reported that the Unit reports should be sent to the State by Oct. 20. There was no Girls? State report available for this month. It was decided not to order any poppies for the upcoming year; the Unit has quite a few left from last year because of the late arrival of last year?s poppies. Members learned that the district meeting will be held in Marengo on Oct. 28. There will be a hat decorating contest, and Connie Pence will decorate a hat for the unit. It was reported that Karen Arduser?s sister-in-law had died, and a sympathy card was sent from the Unit. Dixie Young also thanked the Unit for the card and flowers sent to her after her recent surgery.

Dixie Conrad reported the Unit?s membership was 56. Two new members are Jamie and Alexas Edwards, and they were welcomed to the group.

Members discussed the increase in the price of dues, set by the State. A motion was passed to accept the amounts that members had already paid.

The group discussed what the Unit should do with the funds raised from the four car show bake sales. It was decided to donate funds to the four nursing homes for veterans? Christmas presents, and the rest to be donated to the President?s Project. A donation will also be made to the Stan Richenberger benefit to aid a veteran who is fighting cancer. The Unit may adopt a veteran?s family for Christmas. Carla McCandless will contact Sue Rich for information concerning the donation.

The meeting was adjourned, and the closing prayer was given by Dixie Young.
