Brighton woman killed in train accident Saturday

MT. PLEASANT ? A Brighton woman was pronounced dead early Saturday after a vehicle she was driving was broadsided by a train. The incident remains under investigation.

According to the Iowa State Patrol?s crash report Lydia Danielle Johnson, 18, of Brighton, had attempted to drive around BNSF railroad crossing gates when the train struck her vehicle. The report said she had been northbound on North Iris Street at 1:09 a.m. and that the gates were down and the lights were flashing to indicate an approaching train.

Johnson?s vehicle came to rest northwest of the railroad crossing and the train came to a stop on the tracks. Johnson was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City by Med Force.
