Beer walk postponed due to code change

While Main Street Washington still is planning to hold the inaugural Shops with Hops beer-tasting event in the downtown area, it has been postponed from its original May 17 date to later in the summer.

Main Street Washington director Sarah Grunewaldt said Iowa?s Alcoholic Beverage Division had changed the rules regarding breweries participating in such events, which had made it hard for Main Street to secure Iowa breweries for the event. She said the event needs a little more lead time to get the details worked out.

?It will probably be late June or early July,? she said. ?That is what we are shooting for.?

She said the idea came from the success of the first Sip and Shop wine-tasting event last year. During the event participants can purchase a commemorative pint glass to be used for the tastings, then carried to the next shop. There will be no strolling beverages outside the stores.

She said people have to check in at Central Park and are given a wristband before starting the event.

Grunewaldt had spoken with Washington Police Chief Greg Goodman regarding the events and Goodman had informed her no changes needed to be made, as there were no incidents involved with the inaugural Sip and Shop in 2017.

She also said the Sip and Shop wine-tasting event would return this year on Sept. 27.
