Author Linda Betsinger McCann to visit Swedesburg

Linda Betsinger McCann will be speaking at the Swedish Heritage Museum, in Swedesburg, on Monday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. McCann will be speaking about her newest book, ?The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southeast Iowa.? She also will be at the Washington Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. speaking on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Later that day she will be at the Winfield Library at 1:30 p.m. speaking on Prohibition in Eastern Iowa. Everyone is invited and there is no admission charge.

The CCC was a federal program during the Depression years to assist young men in supporting their families. Most people know about the work done on the state parks, but in Iowa, over 75 percent of the work projects dealt with soil erosion, flood and drought prevention and planting trees. Linda has spoken with 21 men who were in the CCC and shares their memories, and would love to speak with more. McCann has had two books published about the CCC and finished up the central part of the state recently.

Prohibition was a period of time when it was illegal to manufacture, sell or transport liquor in the U.S. This included Iowa. McCann has spoken with the children of moonshiners and bootleggers and will have specific instances in the Winfield area.

McCann is an Iowa native who loves discovering parts of Iowa history that isn?t known about by our younger citizens. She writes to share this history with her grandchildren. She has had 11 books of Iowa history published, and recently finished a book about the POW camps in Iowa during World War II. She will have copies of all her books available for purchase.
