The Washington Iowa Betterment Foundation is hosting their first annual garden walk on Sunday, Aug, 12. The self-guided tour will feature five local gardens where spectators can discuss and visit with homeowners.
Janelle Johnson, a board member with the betterment foundation, says the walk offers guests an opportunity to explore and be in touch with the community. ?This just fits in with people having their yards pretty in the community and it?s something people enjoy seeing and something that tied in well with our mission,? she said.
The mission of the group is to beautify Washington a little bit at a time through sponsorship. The fee associated with the event goes toward the projects the group sponsors. In the past, projects have included funding flowers for the square, paint for teachers? classrooms and improvements to the disc golf course. This year, their projects include helping fund a new street sweeper, the new YMCA building and a new roof for Paws and More animal shelter.
Johnson says the garden walk offers residents the opportunity to see different aspects of the community and connect with neighbors. ?It?s a nice little thing to feature different homes,? she said. ?It?s just a good way to enjoy the community and get some ideas for your own yard and just help better Washington in general.?
The annual garden walk will take place Sunday, Aug. 12, from 1-5 p.m. The event is open to all ages.
