5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! registration available

DES MOINES ? The Healthiest State Initiative, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health, United Way of Central Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education has announced a new way for sectors across the state to affirm their commitment to 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count.

Schools, child care, out-of-school and heath care sites are invited to register online for recognition at either the bronze, silver or gold level based on implementation of 5-2-1-0 strategies at their location.

?The Iowa Department of Education encourages schools, child care centers, and out-of-school programs to register as 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! sites. This is an exciting opportunity to join a network of organizations creating environments that support the development of lifelong wellness and healthy habits,? said Dr. Ryan Wise, director of the Iowa Department of Education.

Registration is free and can be completed at www.IowaHealthiestState.com/5210. A map is also available to see what other sites from across Iowa have registered to foster greater collaboration between sites. Registered sites will be eligible to apply for a Healthiest State Award and have the opportunity to be highlighted during state-level presentations, in addition to other benefits.

?Registering your site demonstrates that your organization is committed to making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation,? said Jami Haberl, executive director of the Healthiest State. ?The future of Iowa depends on having strong and healthy kids and the 5-2-1-0 network of registered sites supports that goal.?

The 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! program provides a framework to create healthy environments and to teach kids how to make healthy choices. This proven, scientific method focuses on the importance of good habits:

5 or more fruits or vegetables each day

2 hours or less of recreational screen time

0 sugary drinks ? drink more water!
